The incidence of circumcision side effects varies between studies. A Nigerian study thatincluded 1662 circumcisions showed a rate just 0.3%. This is significantly lower than the SouthAfrica rate of 12%. Only three boys had to have their surgery revised and no seriouscomplications were found. A recent RCT in 394 boys showed that 12% of the seriouscomplications were caused by surgical errors. Patients had a higher incidence of bleeding andinfection in this study. A decrease in anxiety and depression was associated with the use ofpetroleum jelly. While most side effects of circumcision will fade over time, some may be more permanent. First,epispadias. The penis becomes too flattened or swollen, which can result in decreased sexualsensitivity. A second common side effect is urethral fistula, which results from an excessiveamount of suturing and aggressive clamping. This condition is best treated by surgery as thepenis is very close to the skin. Research in India shows that circumcision can be emotionally and psychologically stressful. Thesurgery is performed in infants without anesthesia. Some men have difficulty having intimaterelationships with their partners. The procedure can also result in erectile dysfunction, whichleads to post-traumatic stress disorder. It has been shown to increase the risk of developingdiabetes and erectile dysfunction. Children may experience traumatizing feelings during the procedure. The procedure is painfuland can lead to anxiety and depression. About one in five boys will experience some form ofpost-traumatic stress disorder following circumcision. A small percentage of circumcised kids willexperience anxiety following the surgery. To ensure that the child is fully recovering from thesurgery, a physician should be present. Apart from the psychological effects, some children mayexperience difficulties with their sexuality after the procedure. In Africa, circumcision is recommended for older boys and men. The procedure reduces thepossibility of certain STDs. It also improves sexual function. Some side effects of circumcisioninclude premature and severe ejaculation. Erectile dysfunction and difficulty in having orgasmare also common. It can also lead to infections of the urinary tract, which can cause problemswith your kidneys later in life. The uncircumcised penis can be taught to wash itself regularly. There are also risks of surgical complications. Sometimes, anesthesia may not be enough tomake the procedure painless. Anesthesia is used to help the child relax during the operation.There are many possible side effects of circumcision, including recurrent pain, bleeding, andanesthesia. This procedure can be very frightening and can even lead you to depression.However, the risks are far less than for post-traumatic stress disorder. Even though a child mayrecover physically and emotionally, the procedure can have a lasting affect on his emotionalwell-being. There are several negative effects of circumcision. An infant may experience trauma after theprocedure in the United States. He may also have difficulties with sexual functioning, erectiledysfunction, or post-traumatic stress disorder.
